Teals North Shore Candidate Revealed – North Sydney Sun

The Teal Independents have a candidate for the state seat of North Shore.

Helen Conway has just announced her run as the “community-backed independent” for the Liberal held seat, picked by North Sydney’s Independent who successfully backed Kylea Tink at the recent federal election.

Conway has lived locally for 28 years, currently in Wollstonecraft. She is the chair of Women for Election (a non-partisan organisation seeking to inspire, equip and sustain women to successfully stand for, and thrive in, public office) and the YWCA.

She is also a director of Endeavour Energy and Catholic Schools NSW. She is the former general counsel for Caltex and is best known for her three year stint as head of the Workplace Gender Equality Agency between 2011 and 2014.

On a website just published in the last few minutes, Conway states: “A few months ago I was approached by community group, North Sydney’s Independent (NSI), who asked me to consider running as a community independent candidate for North Shore. Through my recent role as Chair of Women for Election, I understand how vital it is for women to answer such a call.”

“It’s been clear to me for some time that our community has not been receiving the representation it deserves. We want an MP in Macquarie Street who will listen to our community, channel the concerns of our residents and not be bound by the policies and attitudes of a political party. The success and early influence of community independents in the federal election shows what can be achieved.”

“With your help we can play our role to restore political integrity in NSW, work for a stronger economy and get real progress on climate action and protecting the environment.”
Conway’s announcement adds to a field comprised of Liberal incumbent Felicity Wilson, Labor candidate Godfrey Santer, Green candidate James Mullan and Sustainable Australia Party candidate Georgia Lamb. The election will take place next March.
