Hundreds of nurses and midwives from the Mater Hospital walked off the job today for the second time in 3 months, protesting delayed bargaining with hospital operator St Vincent Private Health.
The Union that represents the workers are calling for shift by shift staffing ratios and for what they believe to be fairer pay. The walk off started at 11:00AM, starting with a march to Mater
Gardens around the corner where they held a rally, before striking for 4 hours.
In July last year staff and St Vincent’s began negotiations on an enterprise agreement. Workers then took strike action later that year on December 22 which led to another meeting with St Vincent’s Health Australia. Yet the union and workers were not satisfied with the outcomes of the meeting leading to today’s action. Union representative Dierdre Duggan said: “St Vincent’s Health are not listening at all and we’ve been making quite a lot of noise recently. Yet they have not paid any attention at all to what we are asking or what we are saying.”
“We want a safe workplace where we can deliver safe care to our patients and we want a fair pay rise.”
Tomorrow staff will strike at St Vincent’s Private Hospital in Darlinghurst, protesting the same bargaining process.
