North Sydney Council wants to reduce the number of parking spaces in some new developments – a move aimed at reducing traffic congestion. This proposal would reduce the rate of allowable off street parking in areas considered to have high public transport access. The Council’s rationale is “Every car parking space provided in a private development generates multiple corresponding trips on our local roads. This adds to congestion and the demands on our already stretched car-based infrastructure. It also contributes to negative urban and environmental impacts.”
The proposed move has prompted an anonymous letter campaign. The letter stated “These changes will majorly impact our already limited on-street parking, resulting in more traffic on already congested roads increasing the chances for accidents and adding to noise and emission pollution as people endlessly circle looking for parking.” The main concerns highlighted surrounded safety, impact on local businesses and an overall reduction in essential parking.
The Council was quick to respond to the circulation describing it as misinformation.
The response stated: “It claims the proposal is a Council decision. This is not true, the Council has not made a decision. It claims Council is proposing to severely reduce the amount of car parking available to residents in new developments. This is not true, this proposal applies only to developments built near major transport hubs where 28 percent of residents do not own a car (according to the 2021 census).”
